Gdansk Docks
Capacity analysis of waterfront area
10

The dockside quarter in Gdansk worldwide known for the rise of the Solidarność movement is currently converted into a waterfront area including several new buildings. The project managers are a group of private investors. The City of Gdansk supports the project. The idea is that the waterfront area should connect the waterways of the docks to the historic city center. The project is an ambitious undertaking of the current city development that sets new standards for the entire troimiasto region (Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot). After the accomplishment of several building projects the local Wyspa Institute of Art, the Technical University of Gdansk and the Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Zawodowa w Nysi – supported by the INIK GmbH – set up a capacity analysis of the waterfront area. The idea was to critically check the current direction of the project and to propose design plus planning adjustments. Starting point of the analysis was an architectural workshop in April 2013 that focused on the capacities of local creative industries and new methodologies of participation.
