The object of the common work of INIK GmbH, ThINK Jena and the Planning Bureau Wahlbuhl was the creation of an integrated energy concept for the districts in the city Eisenhüttenstadt. The work refered specifically to the historic districts that were built in the 1950s and 1960s. Approaches for the future conservation of the buildings and the design of open urban spaces were connected to the development concept, as well.
Eisenhüttenstadt is considered as the first location, where the "principles of socialist urban planning" of the newly founded GDR were implemented. Already in June 1950 the way for the construction of the Iron and Steel Combine East (EKO) was paved, it was directly joined to the model city. Today, the steel plant is one of the industrial sites of ArcelorMittal. (Photo: L. Kienzle)
