In 2005 the Adolf Hellwig factory in the German City of Forst (Lausitz) was meant to be demolished. Due to a lack of industrial growth in the region after the reunification the building had been vacant for years. In the framework of a 2 years EU research project by the Institute of New Industrial Culture (2205-2007) the original demolition plans were cancelled and local stakeholders looked for alternative strategies to later re-use the industrial plant. In the future the Hellwig factory will become the „House of the Families“. The idea is to invited different social non profit institutions to use the building as a semi public office and activity space. In 2008 the City of Forst (Lausitz) commissioned INIK to develop a strategic re-use concept for the building financed by the Bund-Länder-program “Soziale Stadt”.
