The huge power station of Hirschfelde was built from 1911 to 1992. It is the oldest functional industrial fabric in the State of Saxony. Until the 1980s the power station - titled “border of peace” those days – received lignite fossil fuels from the opencast mines of Turoszów and Turów (Poland) and later from the opencast mines of Olbersdorf and Berzdorf (Germany). In 1992 the power station was given up. In 2009 the “foundation of the technical monument and museum Kraftwerk Hirschfelde” has been established. The idea of the foundation is to preserve the history of the industrial site and to support the development of the region. The INIK’s job is to update the current concept of the foundation and to serve as an advisor for the future development.
