Schwarze Pumpe, not far from the Polish border used to provide the gas, electricity and briquettes to almost whole GDR. It has been an industrial giant that impressively documented the economic and politic aims of the socialist republic. The plant „Industrial park Schwarze Pumpe“ is, and will be, intrinsically tied to the region of Lusatia and its inhabitants. The INIK’s project "Schwarze Pumpe" investigates from different points of view hitherto quite unknown chapter of the newer industrial history. A book, which is a result of the project, presents historic facts about construction performance of the plant, calls attention to technical innovations in coal-refinement processes and chemistry, and also emphasizes the architectural potential of the location. "Schwarze Pumpe" tells a story about people from Schwarze Pumpe, about their pioneer work between ideology and everyday life, about their memories, longing and the future prospects.
