The old industrial site Völklingen / Saar for years has dealt with the consequences of the industrial restructuring. The starting point was the closing down of the metallurgical plant Völklingen Hütte and of the coal mines in the region. The urban planning and social grievances are increasingly overlaid by the consequences of the demographic change. The municipality has identified Völklingen city center as an area for the implementation of the program "Social City" and "Urban Redevelopment West". 2007 and 2009 INIK and isoplan Marktforschung were commissioned for the elaboration of an integrated operational concept "Social City“ and an urban development concept for the urban renewal area. The cooperation of both institutions yielded an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to overcome the urban, social and economic problems in the inner city. The work was carried out in the close liaison with the competent Ministry, the district management, the stakeholders and the citizens.
