Since the 1980s Neunkirchen / Saar, a former metallurgical and mining town, is strongly affected by a deep transformation process. While the change of economic trend succeeded meanwhile, the effects concerning urban structures are still striking. Social problems, changes in the retail trade and demographic change left traces, particularly in the city center. From 2005 to 2006 within the framework of the program "Urban Redevelopment West" planners worked out an urban development concept for the entire town (Lück + Otto plus isoplan Marktforschung). From 2010 to 2011 this concept has been adapted for the city center by the working group INIK + isoplan Marktforschung as a part of the program „Social City “.
