Industrial Buildings as a Resource
Re-Use of historic industrial architecture in Lusatia
50

Based on the experiences of the EU founded research project “New Industrial Culture” (2005 to 2007) the INIK GmbH explored re-use opportunities in the context of existing buildings in the German-Polish border region. The idea of the cross border project was to enable successful rehabilitation, reuse and sustainable operation of old fabrics of the industrialization. Among the buildings involved in the project were industrial halls, railway stations, estates of factory owners or factories. Beyond the abstract architectural research the project aimed at illustrating how effective reuse can be achieved in reality. Cities that the INIK GmbH focused at are among others Welzow, Eberswalde, Niesky, Löbau, Cottbus, Forst (Lausitz).
