Within the framework of this project, the aim is to investigate the redevelopment of towns in eastern Germany under regional and urban planning considerations. The focus is not primarily on the reuse of empty old buildings, but rather on the way new vacant lots are dealt with.
With the gradual end of the industrial model of work and society, the resultant increase in unemployment and the demographic decline are particularly evident. The reason for the structural break was in particular the process of de-industrialisation which began abruptly in the early 1990s. In order to investigate the transformation and to monitor the process, this project was initiated by the International Building Exhibition (IBA) and the Fachhochschule Lausitz - supported by the Brandenburg Ministry of Urban Development, Housing and Transport.

Head of project: Prof. Eugen Rabold, Dr. Lars Scharnholz
Period: 2002-2005
Organisation: International Building Exhibition (IBA), INIK e.V., Hochschule Lausitz (FH)
Topic: Urban redevelopment, shrinking processes
