C2 The Lübbenau Power Station
A Link Between an Industrial Landscape
and a Biosphere Reservoir
C.02

INIK Strategy:
The goal is to find a change of use—as a connective element between industrial and natural landscape—for the power station. Establishing a landmark for the Spree Forest triangle would enhance the location.
The goal is an appreciation of authentic mediators such as the distinct regional image, the immediate vicinity to the biosphere reservoir and the label “Industrial Past” in order to link, on one hand, the power station and the Spree Forest triangle, and on the other, the natural landscape and tourism, with the aim of achieving an image transfer on the topics of energy, open-pit mines, Spree Forest landscape etc. This, in turn, contributes to the sense of a unified region.

Background:
Lusatia has been strongly affected by structural change since lignite exploration has been terminated. In 1996, the Lübbenau power station was closed and the site was assigned and developed as an industrial area. Since then the power station has not been used and is in good condition.
Today, the power station lies in the center of the commercial and industrial park “Am Spreewalddreieck” next to the A 13 and A 15 motorways. The connection is very good to the densely populated cities of Berlin, Dresden, Cottbus and Wrocław. North of Lübbenau lies the UNESCO Spree Forest biosphere reservoir.
