A Link Between a Town
and an Active Open Pit Mine
B.01

INIK Strategy:
The goal is to establish a research center in the former administrative building of the Eintracht Lignite Company, thus generating a connective link between the town and the immediately neighboring open pit mine. Housing a university-related research institution would increase Welzow’s attractiveness to innovative companies.

Background:
Through the exploration of lignite deposits during the second half of the 19th century, Welzow developed rapidly from a village in the heath to an industrial center of the region. The engine of this development was the Eintracht Lignite and Briquette Company. Not only did the company operate mines and briquette factories in Welzow, it also shaped the look of the town through public buildings and housing projects for workers.
Among these endeavors is the complex of administrative buildings from the period of 1905 to 1918. Today, these buildings are in relatively good condition because they were in use until recently. In addition, the exterior on some houses has been renovated.
