School project in Cottbus

To make sure that school kids are getting involved in the urban realm design the Cottbus based Bauhaus School invited students to participate in the workshop “Bauhaus School Utopia”. The workshops idea was to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Weimar school. Pupils at the age of 11 were asked to compare the 1912 built Gottfried Forck School in Cottbus’ East with the Bauhaus School in the city center. Students had to study the different architectural qualities within four study groups including the following themes: "light", "form", "color" and "material".

The Bauhaus designed city planner and architect Helmuth Schroeder is one of the “Neue Sachlichkeit” architectural fabric in Cottbus still existing today. After the Second World War, the building served as a school for the children of Russian military personnel. As an integrated school, the historic building is a well known landmark in Brandenburg’s landscape of Modern Movement architecture. The repair of the school was completed in 1999 awarded by the BDA (Bernd Altmann / Uwe Ramisch / Frank Zimmermann).
