New board

Chair Ilija Vukorep and vice chair Karolina Hettchen

The new board of the INIK e. V. is set up. Ilija Vukorep, professor of computer-aided design and architectural theory at FHL, and Karolina Hettchen, research assistant at FHL, foster the link between INIK and the faculty of architecture of Lausitz University of Applied Sciences. In addition both board members transfer a strong input of international experiences and skills to the institute. Karolina Hettchen lived and studied in Poland until 2004. Her starting point in the State of Brandenburg was the World Heritage Studies Program at the BTU Cottbus. Ilija Vukorep grew up in Sarajevo. His academic career started in Germany. He lived at Kassel plus Berlin and finally came to Cottbus in 2006.

To adjust the INIK strategy both new board members want to improve technology oriented skills and the international network of the institute. Cross-border research and the support for international bachelor programs are key goals of Ilija Vukorep and Karolina Hettchen.

INIK at Building Fair in Drzonków

Old industrial buildings as an engine of cultural tourism in the German-Polish region

“Factories and tourism” is the theme discussed by INIK partner Dr. Lars Scharnholz during the building fair in Drzonków near Zielona Góra on the 22nd of February 2008. In recent years the reuse of empty factories has more and more become an integral part of project planning. In this context tourism plays a crucial role. City planers and sightseeing experts realized that empty textile mills, industrial tunnel systems, old shaft towers, huge coal bunkers or large chimneys could become attractive tourist destinations.

Knowledge transfer extended

INIK at the conference of industrial culture in Upper Silesia.

In Upper Silesia industrial culture plays an important role. Numerous cities and municipalities began the process of rediscovering industrial heritage. The old factories and mines, winding towers and production halls are considered as parts of regional history and their potential for future development is being evaluated. This process can also be observed in the city of Świętochłowice.

On 08 February 2006 Świętochłowice hosted a conference on industrial culture titled “We are creating the future” under the honorary patronage of the city mayor Mr. Eugeniusz Moś and the scientific support of the Silesia Technical University (represented by Prof. Krzysztof Gasidło), Lusatia University of Applied Sciences and Institut of new Industrial Culture(represented by Prof. Markus Otto and Dr. Rusinowska-Trojca). During the conference also results of student projects connected with the Silesia Industrial Park in Świętochłowice and Industrial Park SPP in Ruda Śląska were presented.

The follow-up discussion between local participants, university teachers and students showed how current the issues of reusing postindustrial areas are.
